Best Karate Fundamentals 

 M. Nakayama

This is one of my favourite books from the Best Karate series, since it contains a scientific approach to the Karate techniques we practice. I would go as far to say that the book contains more scientific information about the karate techniques than ‘Dynamic Karate’, so will provide some excellent food for thought.

Again, there are some wonderful photographs of JKA greats such as Osaka and Yahara, and their very obvious skill is so clearly demonstrated.

This book deals with Hip rotation, both normal and counter hip rotation, and this is a very useful section, for both the beginner and the advanced student. Less documented ideas such as hikite and forearm rotation are also highlighted in this book, making this book very significant and helpful.

I also loved the section dealing with Tai sabake, and you can clearly see that the teachings of Nakayama Sensei remain as significant now as ever.

This book is very straightforward, and extremely easy to follow. It is quite common for a book that considers the scientific aspect of Karate training to be quite complicated and difficult to get your head around, although Nakayama made this book accessible to both advanced and beginning students.     

This is very much a follow on from Comprehensive Karate from the Best Karate series, as the first book demonstrated the techniques, while this book considers the small details that make the techniques work.

This book in my opinion is the best book of the Best Karate series, particularly if you are interested in the more scientific element of the study of Karate.
