Choku-tsuki (straight punch): this is a basic punch, executed from a basic position. Practice of this should take place before you attempt to involve movement such as in oi-tsuki. It is vital during the punch to ensure it follows a straight line, and that there are no bends in the arm or wrist. You are aiming to make a straight line from your upper arm all the way to the tip of the fist.
It is essential to understand that different associations do different things, so for example if you are going to join an SKIF club then don’t worry if there are minor differences in the way they teach this technique.

Stage 1: Have your feet shoulder width apart in a relaxed position. Place your left hand out in front of your body, but open the hand. Place your right hand at your hip.

Stage 2: Start to pull back the hand that is already out, slowly rotating it to the left 180 degrees, and begin to push out the hand that is at your hip.

Stage 3: Half of the way through, your arms should line up, and due to the rotation of the left hand by the time both hands come parallel, both palms should be facing upward.

Stage 4: Complete the punch with your right hand, twisting your forearm 180 degrees so your palm faces downward, and complete your left hand at your hip (hikite)
