Today we spent the whole class doing basic techniques and kata. However, we had to do everything with full power and speed. We were told to use the blocks as hard attacks using full strength. It was very tiring but after practicing together we were split into two groups, brown belts and above, and all those with lower grades. Then we had to do takyoku shodan and heian shodan with increasing power and speed, each group taking it in turns. It was very aggressive, more so than usual, my arms and shoulders, and most of my body actually, were very tired, but it was not as mentally challenging as some other aspects of karate that we do. I enjoy it both ways really.
Sensei was telling us that we always have to improve on what we have done previously, that it is no good going to class and going through the motions unless we can improve.
Then we did a few katas. We did Takyoku Shodan, Heian Shodan, Heian Nidan then went through Heian Sandan. That is my kata for my next grade so I just followed Sensei through it trying to learn it. I will ask my husband to download the technique in video format off the internet for me to get the idea of it into my head. It’s the mental (learning) side I find the most taxing actually.
