The ultimate aim of the organisation is to provide for its members a forum that will allow them to achieve their true potential through the practise of Traditional Shotokan Karate-Do. The Academy of Shotokan Karate was formed in 2003 by Sensei Dave Hazard, the current National Kata Coach for the English Karate Governing Body (EKGB) and started accepting members in 2004. The ASK encourages and provides the facilities for its members to compete at the most senior levels both Nationally and Internationally. Sensei Hazard in forming the ASK felt that he needed an environment that would allow him personally to evolve his approach to Shotokan Karate-Do. This was endorsed by the late Great Keinosuke Enoeda Sensei, who was Sensei Hazard teacher. Enoeda Sensei’s influences and principles will always remain at the heart of the ASK. The ASK has a national infer-structure and an emerging International affiliate members program. The Academy is growing at an internally controlled rate to provide quality instruction based on developing the individual and supported by an extremely experienced team of Senior Teachers.

Henka-Ryu, the "Way of Change" or "Alternative Way" is not a style. It was the name given to a (somewhat successful) string of karate clubs in the South East London area in the mid seventies by my first instructor, Glen Wylie, a third dan in, I believe, Kyokushinkai. Training was in: kihon; a set of seven novel kata, mostly based on traditional ones, plus Sanchin - which always involved shimewaza (testing); and a fairly brutal form of kumite. When I left London for University my training took me to many different styles and schools, but I stuck with the name "Henka-Ryu" because I liked the maverick quality it implied.

The Shihankai is a non profit, apolitical academy of senior Shotokan karate-ka who will, through its technical committee, ratify/grade those individuals from Godan and above, who are accepted into fellowship. Entry into the Shihankai will only be through the recommendation of an existing fellow. The Shihankai, is therefore not an association, it will not licence nor insure, but will allow and act as a forum of ideas and training practices for the future enhancement of Shotokan-ryu as a martial art in the western world. By ensuring that all applications to the ISKS Technical committee are by invite/recommendation from existing senior karateka in fellowship of the organisation, it is hoped that the standards of the group will be maintained and quality assured by the group itself.

Sasaki Shihan started Instructing in the first JKA India Branch at the Dadar Dojo in Bombay in the year 1978. The process of affiliation was however started some years prior when the current Technical Director of India, wrote to the JKA Headquarters seeking details of affiliation. The JKA replied asking for details of the class, instruction, etc. which were sent and some correspondence later culminated in India becoming a member of the JKA with Nakayama Sensei, then the Chief Instructor of the JKA nominating Sasaki Shoichi Sensei as the Chief Instructor of India. In the days prior to the formation of the JKA World Federation, the JKA used to have a Club system. At the time of affiliation the Indian Branch consisted of only two dojos, one in Bombay at Dadar and the other in Calcutta in the dojo run by the current Chief of Indian Headquarters, Sensei Anil Sinha. The Bombay club was the first registered club from India in the JKA. A few years later the Calcutta club was registered.
Today the JKA India has spanned the entire Country with Branches in over 27 states of the Republic of India.
