I have never seen a clubs website where the instructor doesn't, incorrectly, refer to himself as Sensei.

For people who seem to have a hard-on for everything Japanese, I have never understood how they can get this basic piece of Japanese etiquette so wrong.

Well, maybe not a karate fraund, but a funny thing!

When I was a green belt I was invited by a friend of mine to join a training in a "chineseish" "martial" "art".

The class was not bad, because consisted in punches and kick to padded things. I could perform my geris and tsukis in my shotokan way.

After the class, some sparring.
O man came to me and challenged me.
Well, let's do it!
He was extremely slow, extremely predictable and extremely bad.
He had no oportunity of winning over a green belt (I am not the best fighter now, so guess then!).

After he got beaten clearly by me, all the other guys came and complimented me.
Ei, why are you complimenting? He is just a begginer.
No dude, he is the European Champion of our style.

So, there is a lot of crappy "martial artist" who have ranks, titles and so that prove nothing.
My Senseis NEVER talked about their ranks, Championships, etc. even when they are HIGH ranks and World Champions.

If you think you can believe a person as an individual and you feel that you are improving your performance under his/her tuitance, that's the good thing.

Much like yours Josep I have a story but its about one of my students. Had a guy that was BIG, I mean 6'3" 290.lbs of solid Man mountain, not much chunk on him! he went to a "Chinese-shi" Club as well and after class the head instructor asked to spar with him to Gage his skills.....the one sided sparring match was horrible! My brown belt said all he did was step in a weird pattern and whirl his hands about in patterns as well. My Brown belt swept him a few times, blasted through his arm "pattern" Blocking and took him appart! the funny thing was at the end they were chatting and he told the instructor he was my student...the instructor asked if I would come and teach "Kumite fighting" as they only did the traditional sparring...and if not would my student be willing to do it...and he would buy him a black belt to wear.

My student told him that he could not as it would be fraud to put on a black belt and teach a class before he earned one in Karate. :D

the world is filled with guys looking for a fast track to rank advancement...and unfortunatly its not a small issue!

No word of a lie, that Chinese-ish club charged a bit different than I did back then. See I charged $30 for kids and $50 for adults for three classes a week and they also could train an additional two classes a week at different clubs if they wanted to......the "Kung fools" Charged $70 a month for regular "Basic Classes" (litterally a class in which they did basics and drills...no forms, no fighting, no weapons), $25 a month for forms classes only offered twice a week, $60 a week for weapons classes done twice a week, $35 a month for "Traditional sparring classes" Done once a week and $45 a month for Pre-grading/Grading classes to get you ready to pay the $200 a test done once a month! So if you want to test you pay for all of these and you go up a strip/sash every month or so and pay $480 a month to rank in some hinky Kung fu school. Now you did not have to do this, you could pay a $2500 a year fee and just have the pre grading class and grading to pay for. So your total yearly would be $4940! Or $411 and change a MONTH!

What the hell am I doing wrong that my students pay less than a scammy place like this? Oh, and my student informed me they had a packed class!
