Hip replacement

Postby Tom O'Brien » Sat Jan 18, 2014 3:54 am

My doctor told me I will need a hip replacement. I have arthritis of the right hip :( I said I want a second opinion. He said - OK, you're ugly too! No but seriously, has anyone had a hip replacement?

So far so good for my hips and knees, but my father has had a knee done and my uncle both hips...many years ago. Now the uncles knees were back when Jeep was making the parts! He walks fine and has no really issues, but nothing like a Karate work out for him. He was already easy chair bound when he had them both done, two years appart. He said the best thing was it got him to eat right to drop some weight because the lighter he was the better the surgery went for the second one. He dropped 30 pounds for the second hip, granted he could have done more.

Good luck man and remember that they say the sooner you get back to light exercise the better and the more active you are the better as well.

I know quite a few karate-ka who have had hip replacements and successfully returned to training.

Thanks guys! I feel encouraged 8) Meantime I am still training, as much as I can, so I will be strong thru the surgery & recovery.

check out my blog that gives some info on my particular condition (FAI, which is fairly common among Karate people, particularly those who have been training since they were younger) and let me know if you have any questions.

I finally had it done, one week ago today. I am already walking with a cane. I am getting stronger by the day. I think my biggest challenge will be going slowly

Wow! It's exactly one month ago today that I had the surgery. I'm back in the dojo. Tonight we did boxing. I am doing kicks very slowly. I feel great! :D

OK - 3 months in & wawashi geri is the hardest. When I kick the heavy bag it reverberates from my shin to my hip. The other kicks - mei geri & yoko geri are getting better.
