hernia and training

Postby rhondar » Sun Sep 02, 2012 10:00 am

I wonder if anyone has advice on how best to overcome a hernia problem.

Let me start by saying that I was recently told that I have a small abdominal hernia, ok it has happened I can live with that, but that I have a muscle wall weakness above it which is an "inevitable hernia waiting to happen"

I did ask at the hospital about trying to get that area stronger etc. I was basically told not to put pressure on the area with sit ups and the like, to carry on with my job which involves heavy lifting but wear a "corset", go back in three months.( the lump disappears when I lay down)

Now, I do not do inevitable. I hit on the idea of using a bodi-tek ab belt as a way of exercising the area without strain.
So, has anyone got any thoughts on this, and any experience of the inevitability or not of this.
I would really like to concentrate on Nidan grading as I have been Shodan far too long (9 years)

Regards

Hi Rhonda,

Good luck,

hi thanks for that. update from hospital is not to strengthen the area until after operation as may cause strangulation of hernia
I saw a different Dr. who says the muscle wall weakness is not inevitable hernia but that my muscles work the opposite way to normal (one of 5 to 6 per cent of the population) but remedial excercises will help after the op. It was his specialist subject so I feel happier now.

I've been training with a hernia the only sticks out when I strain me abominal muscles. I just don't do situps. It have not been a problem since it showed up 20 years ago. I try to center everything in my tanden and work from there. I am not a tough guy ,I am just afraid of being cut on and sewen up. lol

Hernia's are not difficult to train with, just avoid any partner work that involves being hit!

Apparently I have had a hiatus hernia for some considerable time now and within the last couple of years I was diagnosed with a ventral hernia. Woke up one morning and as I rose sort of sit up/crunch type movement there it was slightly left of centre around the "six pack" area. No concerns at the moment but keeping an eye on the situation.

well I passed my Nidan grading on the Sat and had my hernia op on the following Weds. So much more comfortable now, nearly six weeks on and no problems. :D only needed painkillers the first day as less painful after than before op :?

Hi Rhonda

Congratulations on passing your Nidan grading. Good to hear that the hernia op went well, like I said try to avoid the potential of being hit.

I had ventral hernia repaired with open surgery and mesh. After one week I was walking 3 miles. I started with Tekki Shodan, Nidan after two weeks ( slowly). I was told I could resume classes after 6 weeks. At 8 weeks I was doing heavy lifting at work. I got the odd twinge early on if I was starting to overdo it. The best results seem to be with exercise as early as possible, but without stressing the core. I am now 3 months post op and have no problems.
