Postby simon » Sun Dec 21, 2008 6:54 pm

After looking on youtube I found jon Mottram doing some excellent katas, finding out that he practises and teached Ishinryu and does many Shotokan katas in Competition I got very confused!! or are Ishinryu katas the same as Shotokan please help

Hi Simon

It is because the Shotokan Kata are very popular in WKF tournaments.

More likely that it's because the Shotokan kata are more aesthetically pleasing (nicer) to look at :D

Definitely seemed to be the case for years down here in South Wales.... I'm biased, but I've never seen a Kyokushinkai kata demonstration that looked as good and only once saw a Wado Ryu kata that looked very impressive.
That's not to say they haven't been good kata, but the Shotokan ones seemed to lend themselves better to what was being looked for in competition.
But it could be a "chicken and egg" situation....

Being a competitor in Kata tournaments before, i alway's used to think that the Shito Ryu system had a couple of more comp friendly Kata.

In saying that our Shotokan club recently entered an all style comp and cleaned up with Shotokan Kata and all the judges where , shito and wado. :?

Another day a different preference i suppose.

Kevin Congratulations to your guys and gals

having competed in all styles events for many years i always felt that it was down to the breadth of experiences of the judges - but have to admit that we did see political allegience appear occasionally

there was in the UK a series of All - styles tournaments - and in thier heyday they TRULY were. it was marvellous - all the idea of a guy named Cliff Hepburn - genious IMHO with what he did (early to mid 80'S)

never mind the fighting - awesome - but the Kata/form events were wonderful to watch or comtete in - i could name so many famous UK MA's who did!

Sorry - was i reminicsing there!

If it's WKF, they only allow Wado, Goju, Shito-ryu, and shotokan kata.

neil - how can they call it an All-styles event then? bit like the Americans do this 'world series' stuff that only americans enter

I've never been involved with the WKF, its predecessors, or its affiliates, so I don't know, but I don't think they necessarily claim to be all styles.

As for the World Series- we'd invite an English baseball team, but you guys would probably bring those mis-shaped cricket bats.

Is it possible that they very discretely, do not recognise anything else outside of these styles as..." Karate"...ahem ..cough cough ..who said that.

The world serious , champion thing done in America, ...i recently heard it explained as... they can all call themselves world Champions if they win as everyone is invited...it's just not their concern if only locals turn up...hence the right to call these tournaments, World or American champs.

The last comp i physically decided to enter nearly 3 years ago , i happened to win the all style senior Kata division,..on the trophy it said Brittish Champion

When i questioned this with the main organiser , he gave me exactly the same response as i have mentioned above

There where only about 20 guys in the comp, what a load of chubby ...still i can alway's tell me grandkids when they are older and no body know's any different about my big Fish moment :P

Nathanso - you'll never have realised what a 'Direct Hit' you just made. (go research this - it is the thruth)

prior to WW2 the people in charge of USA Baseball tried to expand it. They came to the UK and invested a lot of money to get it going - teams around the UK etc

Unfortunately WW2 kicked in and scuppered it - but i have a photo in front of me now that shows it did START! Why - because my Dad was one of the first british players - Tranmere! go research it!

Maybe it woulda been a world series!

it all folded and he went off to war - Gunnery Sergeant Major - Ack-Ack!

Just for reference guys, if I'm not wrong the baseball 'World' series is named after a newspaper which sponsored it in the early days.
However, I believe that they call themselves WORLD champions in some of their sports because for many from those shores they don't really look beyond their borders, the USA = WORLD.
Just an opinion from a now Welsh nationalised Canadian!

Hi Growe.. i was actually referring to a lot of the martial arts comp's in the States, and not the baseball, that advertise and claim as World Champs.

Sorry Kevin I got a bit side-tracked by Fujicolt mentioning the USA baseball. As regards karate, in Dave Hazard's Born Fighter I'm sure he recalls a story of training in a dojo in America where the instructor had a trophy for being world champion. When pressed on it he gave that same explanation - that anyone could enter!
