Yes Jim - it takes a particular mindset to watch yourself - or analyse your own performance in a meaningful way - but Koncept seems to have that approach cos he came here and sought our advice. it is hard though to watch yerself and admit - 'that ain't right i need to change that' i will gladly admit.

however - if you can (as painful as it is) it can lead to major improvement.

and as you have said - once reqlised - yer not alone - go ask for advice elsewhere. which is cool 8)

It helps to have low expectations. I am always surprised when I watch myself of how much better I looked than I had expected, which makes it easy to spot the many things that need improvement.

No - yer daft sod

I merely meant that if after all these years of you training you still consider yourself Cr*p - that is simply about you clearly striving for more. And i KNOW yer far from Cr*p - i have seen videos of your karate

so if you watch those vids yer will be able to see areas of improvement - in exactly the same manner AS ANYONE could. - self assessment - painful for us all but potentially very beneficial IMHO

I get the point now Steve in that case i'm just a "perfectionist" with a long way to go but thanks for the kind words :)

perfectionists are oft the best students - but sadly they tend to post on Forums in the early hours of the morning searching for info - I wonder who could be accused of that - read 'pot/kettle Mr Hyland'

koncept wrote:Hello,

Please allow me to introduce myself, my name is Sam and I've been training in karate for a few years now. I'm a first kyu.

One of the areas I strongly feel that I need improvement on is jiyu kumite. I was wondering if there's anything I can do outside of the dojo (and alone) to improve on this. At home I practice "air karate" (repetition of techniques against thin air) and impact training on a bag.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Osu,

Sam

As a 1st kyu it is quite natural that you find jiyu kumite hard ,most of us do at that stage ,there are numerous combinations of technique that you can practice on your own but I think concentrating on kata probably is the most suitable training for your karate when training on your own .

I saw a great post by Lyndon in the kata section in a thread called " kata the core of karate " read his post ... it will help you .

totally understand Kanku's comment but Kata is not the only aspect of Karate that sole practice will enhance and Koncept asked about a particular aspect.

any area of karate can be enhanced by solo practice - just needs thought and prep IMHO
